I’ll be short on the analysis, because we’ll touch base a little more after the College Football Playoff Selection Committee rankings are released on Tuesday, but it seems there is consensus from the experts on the four playoff teams.  They also agree that Penn State will be playing in the Cotton Bowl if they do not win the Big Ten Championship Game on Saturday.  No so fast my friends — if Penn State doesn’t beat Wisconsin, they’ll have three losses.  Would the selection committee rate Penn State higher than a three-loss USC or Colorado, or a two-loss West Virginia?  What about the Wisconsin team they will face?  A win means they are heading to Pasadena or the Playoff, a loss means a drop of how far?

Crazy Bowl Prediction – What makes it crazy?  First, none of the expert forecasters can pick the team we write about for the game we select, which is actually a hard place to start.  Then the selection must seem slightly illogical, but we’ll explain how it could happen.  Then we stick with it the remainder of the season, we don’t change every week.

This week we predict Kentucky will appear in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl in Memphis.   For the first time in six seasons, the Wildcats are bowl eligible.  It’s more impressive when you consider they started the season 0-2, after being upset by Southern Miss and blown out by Florida.  These Cats won 7 of 10, capped off with an upset of rival Louisville to finish 7-5, with a 4-4 conference mark.  The strong finish combined with the bowl drought will make Kentucky a desirable bowl team.  We think Wildcats fans will jump at the chance to take a trip to Memphis — the night before the Liberty Bowl, the Kentucky basketball team will be playing at Ole Miss, a little more than an hour away.   If Kentucky takes on TCU, it’ll be a rematch of the last bowl game Kentucky won when Bear Bryant was the head coach in Lexington.

Our picks so far –

  • October 31 – Penn State to represent the Big Ten in the Rose Bowl
  • November 7 – Ohio State to be selected to appear in the Orange Bowl
  • November 14 – Washington State to be selected to appear in the Las Vegas Bowl
  • November 21 – USC to be selected to appear in the Alamo Bowl.
  • November 28 – Kentucky to be selected to appear in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl
