There is significantly more agreement among  the experts this week, there are 21 teams that all three agree on.  There are several more that two of the three agree on.  We’re going to tell you which of the unanimous picks they have greater risk of being wrong.

Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl – It comes down to Bedlam this Saturday.  If the Sooners beat Oklahoma State, they’ll get the conference bid. If they lose,  State gets the trip to New Orleans, and  the Sooners will likely head to San Antonio.

Nebraska in the Outback Bowl – If they beat Iowa, they have a chance of playing in the Cotton Bowl in Dallas.  Lose to Iowa Friday and they could find themselves in New York, Nashville or San Francisco.

Louisville in the Orange Bowl – What seemed set in stone 10 days ago is now not certain. The Cardinals don’t have much time to bounce back from a tough loss to Houston, they face rival Kentucky from the SEC.

Colorado in the Alamo Bowl – If the Buffs beat Utah and make it to the Pac-12 Championship Game, they have a chance at the Rose Bowl.  If they lose in the championship game, this spot may go to USC!

Washington in the College Football Playoff – Chris Petersen is building something great, and I am sure that they Huskies will be in the CFP next season.  But to get there this year, they’ll need to beat a very good Washington State team next weekend, and the Pac-12 South winner, which could be Utah, Colorado or USC.  And they’ll need to be impressive in doing so.

Western Michigan in the Cotton Bowl – For this to happen they’ll need to be the highest-ranked conference champion from a Non-Power 5 conference.  For that to happen, they’ll need to beat Toledo on Saturday.  The Rockets are 9-2, losing only to BYU on a last-second field goal, and to Ohio by five.  If the Broncos don’t get broken by the Rockets, they’ll need to tame the Bobcats.  We’ve been impressed by Western all season, we are hoping they Row the Boat all the way to Dallas.

Crazy Bowl Prediction – What makes it crazy?  First, none of the expert forecasters can pick the team we write about for the game we select, which is actually a hard place to start.  Then it must seem slightly illogical, but we’ll explain how it happens.  Then we stick with it the remainder of the season, we don’t change every week.

This week we predict USC will appear in the Valero Alamo Bowl.  The Trojans started the season 1-3, opening with a blowout loss to Alabama, followed by losses to Stanford and Utah.  But they’ve gotten better every week, and QB San Darnold has lifted the team.  Since he became the starter, they’ve beaten Washington, Colorado and a talented UCLA team.  This Saturday, they face rival Notre Dame.  Those early losses may be enough to keep them out of the Pac-12 Championship Game, and we think the Trojans land in San Antonio, to face a team from the State of Oklahoma.

Our picks so far –

  • October 31 – Penn State to represent the Big Ten in the Rose Bowl
  • November 7 – Ohio State to be selected to appear in the Orange Bowl
  • November 14 – Washington State to be selected to appear in the Las Vegas Bowl
  • November 21 – USC to be selected to appear in the Alamo Bowl.
