As the season progresses and things become a little more clear, expert picks should come together, but that really isn’t happening.  With less than three weeks until bowl selections, there are only 12 picks that are shared between these three.  Here’s the list, Navy and BYU are virtual locks based on bowl contracts.

  • Alabama in the Peach Bowl
  • Boise State in the Las Vegas Bowl
  • BYU in the Poinsettia Bowl
  • Central Michigan in the Miami Beach Bowl
  • UCF in the Cure Bowl
  • Clemson in the Fiesta Bowl
  • Eastern Michigan in the Camellia Bowl
  • Idaho in the Arizona Bowl
  • Iowa in the Music City Bowl
  • Navy in the Armed Forces Bowl
  • Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl
  • Washington State in the Holiday Bowl

Can the Sooners win in Morgantown, will Western beat Toledo, what if Iowa beats Nebraska, and we see the Cougars either going higher or lower.  We’ll tough on those two possibilities in a second.

Start making your Thanksgiving weekend plans now – Clear your schedule, get to a game, or plan on camping out in front of the TV.  Rivalry weekend will feature several games that will have an oversized impact on the bowl picture.  Here’s a quick list.

Thursday

  • LSU at Texas A&M – The winner should be heading to the Sugar Bowl!

Friday

  • Nebraska at Iowa – Iowa’s win over Michigan changed everything, they could still finish 8-4, with big wins against highly-ranked teams. And it is still possible to have a five-way tie in the Big Ten West.  Meanwhile, Nebraska has an easier path to the Big Ten Championship Game, and could have the most wins in a season since 2001.
  • Washington at Washington State – The Pac-12 North Division Championship will go to the winner, along with a trip to the Pac-12 Championship Game, and a potential Rose Bowl berth.  If the Huskies lose, they are heading to San Diego or San Antonio, if the Cougars go down, bet on Las Vegas.

Saturday – Watch as many as you can!

  • Notre Dame at USC
  • Florida at Florida State
  • Kentucky at Louisville
  • Purdue at Indiana
  • Illinois at Northwestern
  • Rutgers at Maryland
  • Minnesota at Wisconsin
  • Michigan at Ohio State

Crazy Bowl Prediction – What makes it crazy?  First, none of the expert forecasters can pick the team we write about for the game we select, which is actually a hard place to start.  Then it must seem slightly illogical, but we’ll explain how it happens.  Then we stick with it the remainder of the season, we don’t change every week.

Our Crazy Bowl Prediction is for the team all three experts have penciled in for the Holiday Bowl.  This week, we’ll place Washington State in the Las Vegas Bowl. And even though the experts are all picking Boise State, we say it will not be a repeat. So here’s how it happens.  The Cougars have a very difficult remaining schedule, with games at No. 12 Colorado and at home against No. 7 Washington.  Beat the Huskies and they get to play in the Pac-12 Championship where they would face another nationally ranked team.  If they win those three games, they’ll appear in the Rose Bowl.  Lose to Washington or in the Pac-12 Championship Game, they’ll find their way to Las Vegas.  Here’s the Pac-12 bowl picture –

  • Rose Bowl – USC, Utah or Washington
  • Alamo Bowl – USC or Washington
  • Holiday Bowl – Utah
  • Sun Bowl – Colorado
  • Foster Farms Bowl – Stanford
  • Las Vegas Bowl – Washington State
  • Arizona Bowl – Arizona State

What if Washington makes the College Football Playoff?  If  that happens, we believe Utah or Colorado moves into the Rose Bowl.  USC still heads to San Antonio, Stanford to the Sun Bowl and Washington State to the Foster Farms Bowl.  For the Huskies to get there, they’ll need to beat ASU, win in Pullman and defeat the South Division Champion.  They’ll also need to get enough love from the selection committee to step in front of some other one and two-loss teams.

  • October 31 – Penn State to represent the Big Ten in the Rose Bowl
  • November 7 – Ohio State to be selected to appear in the Orange Bowl
  • November 14 – Washington State to be selected to appear in the Las Vegas Bowl
