The opening of the 2015 college football season is finally her! The season, gets underway tonight with a couple of great contests and runs through Monday night There is only one game featuring top ranked opponents, but there are several key matchups that can make or break a team in the season opener.
No. 2 TCU at MINNESOTA The Horned Frogs start the season ranked the highest in the polls in their history. Trevone Boykin returns under center and is one of ten starters back on offense. The Frogs are coming off a 12-1 campaign and defeated this Gopher team 30-7 last year, while forcing three turnovers. The Gophers have lost several key players on both sides of the ball, but do get back quarterback Mitch Leidner. The home environment will surely help here, but the Frogs are just the better team. HORNED FROGS 34, GOLDEN GOPHERS 17
No. 15 ARIZONA STATE VERSUS TEXAS A&M Both of these teams have the potential to have stellar seasons. The Sun Devils will be led by quarterback Mike Bercovici, whom I think is an upgrade over the departed Taylor Kelly. The Devils are loaded on the defensive side of the ball and have solid special teams. The Aggies finished last season at 8-5. Quarterback Kyle Allen suffered growing pains in his freshman campaign. I look for huge improvements from him this season. The Aggie defense took it’s lumps last year. They return eight starters and get the welcome addition of defensive coordinator John Chavis. This game could easily be the best of this weekend. This game will be played in Houston, Texas, which means a virtually home crowd for the Aggies. I love the Aggies to surprise many, they start with a victory here! SPARKY SENT PACKING 41-37.
BYU AT NEBRASKA I can’t wait to watch this game for two reasons.
- Is Taysom Hill fully recovered from knee injury?
- What will Mike Riley’s offense look like?
Hill was incredible last season before going down, with a season ending ACL. He was on pace for Heisman consideration. When he went down the Cougars fell apart. The Cougars suffered a big blow a few weeks ago, when it was determined that leading rusher Jamal Williams, would sit out the season. I really believe the Huskers have a chance for a big season. Quarterback Tommy Armstrong has a chance to flourish under Riley. New attitude, new enthusiasm, and new result in Lincoln. EXPERIENCED COUGARS SHUCKED BY FARMBOYS, CORNHUSKERS 34-28.
PENN STATE AT TEMPLE The Nittany Lions have a solid chance at a double-digit win season, as Christian Hackenberg will finally work behind, what should be a quality offensive line. The Lions should also be much better on both sides of the ball and have a favorable schedule. But the Owls have what could be their best team in be decades! They get back 19 starters, 10 from a defense that allowed only 17 points per game! Quarterback P. J. Walker will be the key. I think the Owls fight to the bitter end here. LIONS SCRATCH OUT 20-17 VICTORY.
No. 20 WISCONSIN VERSUS No. 3 ALABAMA Defense will decide this contest. The Tide has many questions on offense, and may play as many as three quarterbacks in this one, and they’ll be looking for the running game to carry them early. The Badgers also have many unanswered questions on offense. Replacing Melvin Gordon and three offensive linemen won’t be easy. This is the only game this weekend between two ranked teams and will be played in Dallas (Arlington’s AT&T Stafium). The Tide will have a huge crowd edge, and they sport the better defense. TIDE ROLLS 33-17.
OLD DOMINION AT EASTERN MICHIGAN The Monarchs defeated the Eagles last year 17-3, but they have no experienced quarterback, lost their top receiver from last year, and have only five returning starters, on a defense that allowed 38 per game. EMU Quarterback Reggie Bell is a dual-threat who is primed to have a breakout season. If he stays healthy he could be among the top quarterbacks in the MAC. This Eagle team should be much improved over last seasons 2-10 mark. EAGLES MUNCH ON MONARCHES 17-3
