|Every Monday we’ve been publishing bowl projections from experts across the web, along with a few notes and observations. Starting last week, we moved the projections into two groups. We are publishing one group on Monday (which you are reading) and on Wednesday, after the College Football Playoff selection committee releases its weekly rankings. With the Monday projections, we’ll offer a bowl projection of our own that may seem crazy at first, but we’ll provide the rationale behind it, explain how it can happen. Hopefully we’ll surprise you not with the pick, but how it falls into place as the season goes on (we invite you to check our picks from the last few years). Each week, we’ll list our earlier picks, and after the bowls are over, we’ll review our projections. On Wednesday, we’ll analyze the experts picks, and point impact games that you may not be aware of. So here are the expert picks, and our crazy bowl pick. Tune-in Wednesday for analysis and picks from three other experts. (Click here for a list of updated conference tie-ins)
Our Crazy Bowl Projection – Iowa vs. Arkansas in the Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl in Nashville.
WOOOO PIG SOOIE !!! Iowa, the state with more pigs than any other, knows something about hog calls, and the Hawkeyes will take on the Razorbacks in great bowl city. Arkansas, is coached by Bret Bielema, a former pig-farmer who was a walk-on football player at the University of Iowa. Bielema would become a graduate assistant at Iowa, launching a coaching career that would lead him to Wisconsin, where he won three consecutive Big Ten titles, before leaving for Arkansas. While at Iowa, he got a tattoo of the Iowa Hawkeyes logo.
For this game to happen, the Gator Bowl will need to host an ACC team rather than a Big Ten team. It is possible the Hawkeyes could end up in Jacksonville, or San Francisco, but this might be the year for Iowa to play in a bowl a game their fans can drive to. The story lines and connections with the Arkansas coach would make this more than a game.
Arkansas clearly has been getting better and better, and now they are bowl eligible. There are a few other bowl possibilities for the Hogs, including Memphis and Houston, plus Birmingham and Shreveport.
Here are the predictions that we made earlier far this year and when we made them:
· West Virginia vs. LSU in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl (October 13)
· South Carolina vs. Penn State in the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl (October 20)
· Duke vs. Notre Dame in the Capital One Orange Bowl (October 27)
· Miami (FL) vs. Tennessee in the Belk Bowl (November 3)
· Nebraska vs. USC in the Holiday Bowl (November 10)
· Texas vs. Florida in the AdvoCare V100 Texas Bowl (November 17)
While we would love to change several of these picks, what is different about our selections is that we don’t change the selections, we don’t use the same team twice, and when we select it, we are looking to see that one or fewer of the several experts we follow are using the pick.
BOWL PACKAGES from our sponsor will be announced in the near future!
