Notre Dame at Florida State, will highlight what I’m watching in week 8

WE HAVE HAD TWO SENSATIONAL WEEKENDS OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL IN A ROW, the question is will we get a third? Chances are pretty good as conference as the Big 12 features three solid match-ups Saturday, the Pac-12 has two very compelling games and the Mountain West features a big-time battle that could decide the Mountain Division.  And that’s not even where we are starting.

No. 5 NOTRE DAME (6-0) AT No. 2 FLORIDA STATE (6-0) –  This game features two quarterbacks who have never lost a regular season game. Jameis Winston is 19-0 as a starter while Everett Golson is 16-1, with the only loss coming in the BCS Championship Game. Golson has had the better season to this point, tossing 16 touchdown passes to Winston’s 11.  Neither team has been able to mount much of a rushing attack.  As the Jameis Winston saga continues, I’m going to assume he will play the rest of the season, but at some point all these distractions will take a toll. Will it be this Saturday?  I don’t think so, defense decides the winner of this game and the edge goes to the Seminoles. FAMOUS JAMEIS PROVES TENACIOUS, SEMINOLES WIN 29-24.

No. 14 KANSAS STATE (4-1) AT No. 11 OKLAHOMA (5-1) Statistically speaking, these two teams are a mirror image of each other. Both average 40 points per game and surrender 21 points per game.  But three distinct factors have me picking a winner in this game. First, Oklahoma is the only Big 12 school that Bill Snyder does not have a winning record against! Second, under Stoops, Oklahoma is 15-0 in the game immediately following the Red River Rivalry. Third, The Sooners are 41-2 at home in Big 12 conference games since 2002.  SOONERS LOVE THE EARLY KICKOFF, BOOMER SOONER 33-24.

No. 4 BAYLOR (6-0) AT WEST VIRGINIA (4-2) This will be the third meeting between these schools since the Mountaineers joined the Big 12 two years ago and in the first two games, the teams have combined for an unbelievable 248 points!  These teams both are coming off dramatic fourth-quarter wins. Clint Trickett has actually out-performed Bryce Petty thus far on the season. Trickett has a much better completion percentage and has thrown for 2,203 yards versus Petty’s 1,534. The Bears have a better running game led by Shock Linwood and also have the defensive edge.  But Playing in Morgantown is NO picnic! I look for a hard-fought battle with Baylor getting another fourth quarter win.  MUCH CLOSER THAN THE EXPERTS THINK, MOUNTIES FALL SHORT 54-51.

No. 15 OKLAHOMA STATE (5-1) AT No. 12 TCU (4-1) Many will think that TCU is primed for the upset after blowing a late lead last week at Baylor. The fact is, the Horned Frogs are a much better team and will be playing with a chip on their shoulders. Trevone Boykin’s transformation into a quality quarterback will be on display here. . The home team is 7-1 in this series. The Cowboys have been better than expected, but it won’t be enough.  COWBOYS UNABLE TO SADDLE HORNED FROGS, TCU 41-24.

No. 21 TEXAS A&M (5-2) AT No. 7 ALABAMA (5-1) Both these teams enter this contest struggling. The Aggies have dropped their last two games, losing to Mississippi State and Mississippi, two of the top teams in the country. Alabama fell at Mississippi and then held off Arkansas in a game in which they were outplayed.  The Tide should be glad to be home for this encounter. Defense should decide this game, and Alabama has the clear edge. The defensive line of Alabama should dominate, giving Aggie quarterback Kenny Hill fits! ROLL TIDE 31-20.

No. 20 UTAH (4-1) AT OREGON STATE (4-1) Utah has been outstanding, with road wins over Michigan and UCLA. The Utes feature a balanced offense and an opportunistic defense that leads the nation with 28 sacks! The Beavers have yet to get a signature win this season, and have one loss on the road at USC. Last season quarterback Sean Mannion had his way with the Utes, tossing four touchdowns in a 51-48 win. Mannion will again be the difference in front of a sold out home crowd! BEAVERS PADDLE UTES 35-31.

  • IOWA AT MARYLAND……Homecoming brings Terrapins out of shells, Maryland 27-24
  • VIRGINIA AT DUKE……Kyrie Irving cheers for the Cavaliers, Virginia 30-28
  • STANFORD AT ARIZONA STATE……Cardinal defense too tough for Devils, Stanford 26-17
