Heisman and BCS Dreams Could Come True This Week’s Mid-Major Review


HEISMAN AND BCS BERTH ON LINE  –  Friday night, the Heisman Trophy and a BCS berth could be on the line, when Northern Illinois and Bowling Green meet in MAC Championship Game.   The game has huge implications for the Huskies who, with a victory, should receive an automatic bid to a BCS bowl game.   The game will feature  Jordan Lynch, a Heisman Trophy candidate and  one of the best players in the nation.  Lynch ranks second in this week’s ESPN Experts Poll, and with a big game Friday, Lynch could find himself in place to potentially take home college football’s most prestigious individual award.

FALES PASSES TEST –  It was Black Friday for defenses in San Jose on Friday.  Derek Carr was simply amazing.  The Fresno State quarterback threw for six touchdowns, and 519 yards, but his team still lost.   Spartan quarterback David Fales saved his best game of his career for last, leading San Jose State to victory against the Fresno State last Friday.  Fales threw for a career high 547 yards and 6 TDs, while adding 33 rushing yards and another score.

The Mountain West Championship Game will be played Saturday between the Fresno State Bulldogs and the Utah State Aggies.  Fresno State is coming off a heartbreaking loss at San Jose State in a shootout that saw them fall out of contention for a BCS bowl game bid.  Utah State got there by avoiding a shootout against the Wyoming Cowboys and are riding a streak called five-straight-wins. The winner of this game will play is slated to play  in the Las Vegas Bowl, a game I will be attending. 

In the Sun Belt Conference, Louisiana-Lafayette  lost Saturday to the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks, but got a big break when Arkansas State lost to Western Kentucky, allowing the Rajin’ Cajuns  to at clinch at least a share of the Sun Belt Championship. The Rajin’ Cajuns accepted a bid to the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl against Tulane and will close out the season this Saturday against South Alabama.

The Rice Owls and Marshall Thundering Herd will face off in the Conference USA championship. The Marshall Thundering Herd took the East division on Saturday with a stunning win over East Carolina, while the Rice Owls clinched the West with a win over the Tulane Green Wave. The winner will be the outright Conference USA Champion and more than likely play the AutoZone Liberty Bowl.
