A change in the Championship – Stanford’s defeat of Oregon moved Florida State into every Championship Game prediction.  According to all of the experts, the Ducks will be facing Clemson, which gets an large bid, in the Orange Bowl.

That Dog is named “Buster” – the Fresno State Bulldogs and Northern Illinois Huskies were ranked Nos. 14 and 15 in the latest BCS standings.  If they hold those rankings to the end of the season, it would mean that one of these teams would receive an automatic bid to a BCS-series bowl game.  Northern has a huge game Wednesday night against 9-1 Ball State, while Fresno takes on 3-6 New Mexico on Saturday.

Sweet Home State – Teams from the State of Alabama have won the last four BCS Championships, and the Crimson Tide is currently rated No.1.  Meanwhile, three of four experts are picking Auburn to replace Alabama in the Sugar Bowl if the Tide play in the BCS Championship Game.  The Iron Bowl, the annual game between Auburn and Alabama, was won by the Crimson Tide 49-0 last season.  This year’s game will be a lot closer, and could have a huge impact on the bowl season.

This Week’s Pick: The Nebraska Cornhuskers in the Buffalo Wild Wing Bowl.   For Nebraska to get to Pasadena, the Cornhuskers would have to defeat Michigan State this week, win at Penn State, and beat Iowa.  They would then need to return to Indianapolis and defeat Ohio State in the Big Ten Championship Game, a tall-order for any team.  If the Huskers don’t make it to Pasadena, they will have at least three losses, and we think that Wisconsin and Michigan State will finish with two losses, claiming the Capital One and Outback Bowl selections. We also think that if Minnesota wins against either Michigan State or Wisconsin, they would end with three losses and get a Florida bid ahead of Nebraska based on the head-to-head victory.  So we think Nebraska will head to Arizona for the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl, and a date with a former Big XII rival

Past Picks

  • November 3 – Miami (FL) in the Chick-fil-A Bowl
  • October 27 – South Carolina in the Cotton Bowl Classic
  • October 20 – Michigan State in the Rose Bowl

I think Northern — they’ve blown everyone but Iowa out, though they’ll be challenged tonight. Lynch is a true dual-threat. For Fresno, Carr is a stud and he has two great receivers. I’ve been floored by how many points the Fresno D gives up.
