What happens this week, doesn’t stay in this week – On Thursday night, two games featuring two Top-10 teams take place.  Oklahoma travels to Baylor and Oregon heads to Stanford.   To remain in contention for a conference title, Oklahoma must win, but they’ll be facing a Baylor team with an outstanding defense and an even better offense.  Meanwhile, the Ducks have their sights set on a BCS National Championship Game appearance.  Winning in Palo Alto may be the toughest test the Ducks have all season, but with a victory, they’ll firmly be in control of the division, and most likely claim permanent ownership of the No.2 spot in the BCS rankings.   A Stanford win would change everything for almost everyone, while a Stanford loss sets the Cardinal up what could effectively be a final- game-playoff against Notre Dame for an at-large bid to the Rose Bowl, or other BCS game.    On Saturday, LSU travels to Tuscaloosa to take on the Crimson Tide, in a series where the visitor often emerges victorious, including in eight of the last 12 meetings.   Also on Saturday, BYU hopes that Madison will be the place where they end the Badgers hopes of getting an at-large BCS bid, while moving up in the rankings themselves.  The Cougars are 6-2, with wins over Texas, Houston and Boise State, and they still face Notre Dame besides Wisconsin.

It’s not over for Nebraska – If it seems like Nebraska’s season is lost and has a cloud around it, remember this — They are still in control of their own destiny and have only one conference loss.  The Cornhuskers travel to Michigan Saturday, and host Michigan State next weekend.  They’ll likely be the underdog in both games, and it would be surprising, but not shocking to see the Huskers win, and take control of the division race.  A 10-2 finish, and another Legends Division Championship is not out of the question.

This week’s bowl prediction:  Miami (FL) in the Chick-fil-A Bowl.   I know this isn’t as much of a stretch as most of the picks that I make, but I think Miami will play in Atlanta, regardless of whether or not the ACC receives two BCS bowl bids.  Right now, Miami leads the ACC Coastal, and will likely be favored the last four games, putting the Canes at 11-1.  They’ll likely face Florida State in  the ACC Championship Game, and based on last night’s 27-point loss, again lose to the Seminoles.  With two losses, the Canes fall in the rankings and would not get an at-large BCS bid.  The Chick-fil-A Bowl has hosted Clemson several times in recent years, both during the bowl and in kickoff games.  Miami is one of the most/least liked teams, and the prospect of a New Year’s Eve match-up against a 9-3 SEC team makes for a great game, great TV and lots of excitement.

Our earlier predictions:

  • October 27       South Carolina in the AT&T Cotton Bowl
  • October 20       Michigan State in the Rose Bowl Game
