Bowl Projections — October 29, 2012

Only six undefeated teams remain on the Road To Miami, after this past weekend saw five teams that had been undefeated lose.  The number could get even smaller next week.  Of the six remaining undefeated teams, one is ineligible for post-season play (Ohio State), and two others, Alabama and Oregon, will go on the road to face the teams that were the two top-rated teams in pre-season polls, LSU and USC.

This week we added Matt Murschel, the Orlando Sentinel’s national college football writer, as a fourth expert to the bowl projections and predictions that we report to you.   It’s interesting to note that all four experts pick the same two teams in each the BCS National Championship Game, the Fiesta Bowl, The Discover Orange Bowl, and the Chick-fil-A Bowl.  Additionally, there are several games where all four select the same team as one of the bowl participants.

Here’s their picks for your review, followed by our wild bowl prediction, and the rationale behind it.  Last week, we forecast Wisconsin and Notre Dame to meet in the Rose Bowl Game, this week we are doing another BCS bowl game.

Our bold bowl prediction –  Washington vs. Boise State in the Maaco Bowl Las Vegas.    The reason that we selected Boise State is that all of the experts have the Broncos playing in the Discover Orange Bowl against Florida State.   We don’t believe that Boise State will get one of the four at-large BCS bids, because Notre Dame and the SEC runner-up are locks for two of the bids.  Before considering Boise State, the other two bowls will consider the ACC-runner up if they have only one loss, the Big XII runner-up with losses to two highly ranked teams, a  Pac-12 team that has two close losses or even Louisville if the Cardinals lost only to Rutgers.  This isn’t to diminish the outstanding season the Broncos are having, it is just our rationale for why Boise will not be in a BCS game this year.   As the Mountain West Champion, they would get a bid to the Maaco Bowl Las Vegas, and face northwest rival Washington, which has defeated two ranked teams this season.
