What I’ll be watching this weekend

No. 11 Mississippi State 7-0 at No. 1 Alabama   The Bulldogs have been a huge surprise this season.   Quarterback Tyler Russell has thrown for 1,573 yards and 15 TDs with only one interception.    In addition, Tailback LaDarious Perkins has added 724 rushing yards with eight scores.    The balanced offense has been aided by a smothering defense that is allowing only 14.4 PPG.   This week they’ll face an Alabama defense ranked No. 1 in the country, allowing only 8.3 PPG.   The Tide has the most balanced offense in the country as well, averaging 220 yards per game through the air and another 219 on the ground.    A. J. McCarron has been solid completing 69% of his passes for 16 TDs with no interceptions.   The Tide does have LSU on deck nest week, but I just don’t think the Bulldogs have enough to win on the road here.   Bama 33  MSU 13

No.. 9 USC 6-1 at Arizona 4-3     The Trojans,  winners of four straight games, comes to the desert in what could well be a nail biter.  Matt Barkley has continued his outstanding play as he has thrown for 1,773 yards and 22 TDs.   Receivers Marquise Lee and Robert Woods have lived up to their All-America potential combining for 104 receptions and 17 TDs.    But the Wildcats are led by Quarterback Matt Scott who has actually out performed Barkley.   He is ranked 5th nationally in passing, averaging 352 yards per game, and Running Back Ka Deem Carey has added 842 yards on the ground.   The 4-3 Wildcats losses have all come to teams ranked in the top 17!    The Wildcats traditionally play the Trojans to the wire, with the last five contests decided by seven points or less.    The Trojans have a huge game next week with undefeated Oregon, and could be looking ahead.  I think this game goes to the final whistle, but USC gets it done.   Trojans 38,  Wildcats 34

No. 10 Georgia 6-1 vs. No. 2 Florida 7-0   The worlds largest “Cocktail Party”  looks like it will be one of the biggest games of the season.   A Georgia victory could throw national polls into complete disarray, and give the Bulldogs the inside track to the SEC East Division title and a berth in the SEC Championship.    The Bulldogs balanced offense features a ground game led by Freshmen Tailbacks Keith Marshall and Todd Gurley, who have combined for 1,110 yards.   Aaron Murray has tossed 16 TDs, and is looking for a signature win in a big game.   The Gators have the 4th ranked defense in the country, allowing only 12.1 PPG, and the offense has been solid.   I think the Bulldogs pull off a major upset here.    Georgia 29,  Florida 23

No. 5 Notre Dame 7-0  at No. 8 Oklahoma 5-1    In a weekend of outstanding games, this may be the best of all.   The Irish have been riding on the backs of a defense ranked 2nd in the country, allowing only 9.4 PPG and playing with toughness and attitude.   Everett Golson has been battling nagging injuries, but has been named the starter at quarterback.   The Sooners have an explosive offense, ranked No. 5 in the country, scoring nearly 45 PPG.   Senior Quarterback Landry Jones has tossed for 1,653 yards and 12 TDs.   This game basically comes down to how well the outstanding Sooner offense can move the ball against the outstanding Irish defense.  Notre Dame is coming off close victories in two very physical outings against Stanford and BYU.    I believe Coach Stoops gets the maximum effort from his boys in Norman.   Sooners 33, Fighting Irish 14
