What to Watch This Week

Baylor at West Virginia If you are into offensive fireworks, this should be the game of the week!  Baylor comes in 3-0 and ranked No. 25. I have been quite shocked with the offensive production after the departure of Robert Griffin III. The Bears are averaging 361 passing yards per game and an additional 207 on the ground. Nick Florence simply stepped in and thrown for 1,004 yards 11 TDs in the first four games. This balanced attack will take to the road in the Big XII opener for both clubs. The Mounties play their first game as a member of the Big XII conference with a No. 9 national ranking. Quarterback Geno Smith leads the attack that averages 47 PPG. Smith has thrown for 1,072 yards and 12 TDs, with a whopping 81% completion percentage. Neither team is known for defensive prowess, so look I look for a track meet here!

Ohio State at Michigan State Another good matchup featuring two nationally rated teams.  The 4-0 Buckeyes are led by Quarterback Braxton Miller and a pretty solid defense that is allowing only 17 PPG. Miller has passed for 754 yards and also leads the team in rushing with another 441. The Spartans open league play at 3-1, losing only to Notre Dame. Sparty is led by one of the best defenses in the nation, allowing less than 12 PPG. For the Spartans to win, the defense will have to excel in this. The Spartan offense is led by LaVeon Bell, who has 610 yards rushing this season and is clearly the go to guy on the offense.  With strong defenses, I think this game will be decided in the 4th quarter. The Buckeyes expect to get back 2 starting corners this week. I believe they put 8 guys in the box and dare Sparty to throw

Wisconsin at Nebraska What a difference a year makes.  The last two years, Wisconsin had one of the highest scoring offenses in the country, and won back-to-back Big Ten titles. This season, the Badgers have struggled out of the gate, with an offense that is ranked 102nd in the country!  The Badgers will need to rely on a defense that is only giving up 17.3 points per game.  The Huskers on the other hand are clicking on all cylinders on offense, averaging 48.5 PPG so far this year.  The Huskers average 48.5 PPG and have managed this while leading rusher Rex Burkhead has been sidelined most of the time with an injury. The Huskers are led by Quarterback Taylor Martinez who has really improved his passing this year.  A second loss this early in the season will be a big blow to either team!

Texas at Oklahoma State Another huge battle in the Big XII Conference! Texas, is off to a 3-0 but starting conference play with this contest followed by games against West Virginia and Oklahoma! The Horns feature a solid offense that is averaging 49 PPG.  Quarterback David Ash has thrown for 703 yards and 7 TDs, and the run game has been a pleasant surprise, where a trio of running backs has combined to rush for 258 yards per game. The defense has also been solid allowing only 16 PPG.  For Oklahoma State, it is all about the offense.   Cowboys quarterbacks have combined for a 67% completion percentage and 11 TDs, and are averaging 378 yards passing per game, second most in the nation.  The running game is averaging 308 yards per game.  The Cowboys have had a week off to get ready for this game and also have next week off. I think that gives coach Gundy a big advantage here. Something tells me the Cowboys pull this one out! Cowboys hook the Horns 38-30

Oregon State at Arizona Led by a defense that has allowed only 13.5 PPG, the Beavers come in 2-0 with very impressive wins over Wisconsin and UCLA. Quarterback Sean Mannion has also been impressive, throwing for 327 yards per game versus two good defenses.  Arizona started the year 3-0 before taking to the road in Eugene, where they were blasted 49-0 last week. Matt Scott and Ka Deem Carey have paced an Arizona offense that is averaging 34 PPG, even with the shutout. I’ll become a Beaver believer if they can pull this one out in the desert but I believe Rich Rodriguez will have his squad ready to go

  • The Mountaineers get the call in this one and win going away 51-38
  • I like the Buckeyes to get this one late as Miller makes a couple of big plays with his feet. Buckeyes 23-Spartans 16.
  • A young Quarterback, making the first road start of his career in this environment will be challenged. Nebraska 35-Wisconsin 10
  • The Cowboys have had a week off to get ready for this game and also have next week off, and I think that gives Coach Gundy a big advantage. Cowboys hook the Horns 38-30
  • One hundred degree tempatures and a good Wildcat secondary and balanced offense, will be too much for the Beavers. Wildcats 33-13
