What to watch this weekend

Boise State at Michigan State     This is a huge season opener for both schools.  Both teams come into this matchup having to replace to big-time QBs with Kellen Moore and Kirk Cousins both graduated.   Boise has opened the last three seasons with consecutive road victories over Oregon, Virginia Tech and Georgia.   But this year, the Broncos have only seven returning starters!    They not only lose Moore, but also Running Back Doug Martin and Wide Receiver Tyler Shoemaker.   Could this be the year the Broncos struggle out the gate?  The Spartans returns eight starters on a defense that could be one of the best in the entire country

Ohio at Penn State   I personally can’t wait to watch this game to see how the emotion plays out here.   My guess is that Bill O’Brien, has these boys motivated to the MAX.   For the first time since the Paterno era, the players will have their name on the back of the uniform!    The Penn St. defense should be able to shut down one  Tyler Tettleton, one of the better quarterbacks in the MAC.   Tettleton passed for over 3,000 yards and ran for another 916 last year.   Emotion should be clearly on the side of the Nittany Lions.

Alabama Vs. Michigan at Cowboys Stadium   Originally I thought Alabama would win this game easily.  When I looked more closely, I realized that the time to beat the Tide will be early in the season.  To beat the Tide, you better have a good QB who can make big plays, which is exactly what the Wolverines have!  Dennard Robinson is one of the best playmakers in the country.   The Heisman hopeful will have his hands full, but I expect him to make a few big plays.  The question may be how will the Michigan defense stop Alabama?

Notre Dame Vs. Navy in Dublin  Notre Dame plays what is probably  the toughest schedule in the country.  Facing that, the Fighting Irish understand that when you get a cupcake you better eat it!   Navy fits the cupcake role this year.  Navy losses starting Quarterback Kriss Proctor and stud running back Alexander Teich who combined to rush for more than 1,800 yards.    I am sure Navy will have Notre Dames at attention — The Irish have lost 2 out of the last 3 to the Midshipmen.   Will the luck of the Irish be with the Fighting Irish?

SMU at Baylor  I am wondering how much Baylor will miss Robert Griffin III, Terrence Ganaway and Kendall Wright.  I also want to see just how good Texas transfer Quarterback Garrett Gilbert really is for SMU, who as a dark horse in Conference USA.  Remember the Bears opener against TCU (which also lost to SMU) last season? This should be another high scoring game and may be decided late.

My take

  • I look for Sparty to shut down the Bronco offense and cruise to a 24-10 victory.
  • Emotion carries the Nittany Lions to a 22-13 victory over the Bobcats.
  • Even though it is early in the season, in this matchup it’s Roll Tide.   Alabama 30  Michigan 24
  • luck of the Irish reigns supreme on the Emerald Isle.    Notre Dame 31  Navy 10
  • I think SMU ponies up!   SMU 38  Baylor 34
